What is the best time to look for a job?
As Founder of electricianXchange and as a mentor to lots of A-Grade electricians / apprentices I've been asked
this question:
When is the best time to look for your ideal
job?
If you are not getting the best job mix or get variety of work or get enough
learning opportunities or have the right team environment or see the right
incentive structure in place where you're at (whether monetary or non-monetary)
or have something to look forward to day-in-and-day-out and have wondered
when to look for the ideal job - here is my response.
The best time to look for a job is ........
when you have a job.
Think about this. You work 7.5 hours a day and more. Then there's travel time
to and back. So work takes up a third of the prime time within your life. For
something as important as taking up a third of the best part of your life -
should you be doing this when you are calm and able to take sensible decisions?
Or doing this when you've been laid off or are put under immense mental and
financial pressure as in when things get really bad?
Seems obvious, right?
The best time to look for work is when you have work.
You can now do this through a User Name (so no one knows) on a technology
platform created for electricians / apprentices where you can indicate your
motivation in terms of looking for new work, the role you'd like to be
contacted for, whether you're open to remote work or not, the location you'd
like to work within, whether you want EBA or non-EBA work & what hourly
rate you desire. Then employers directly contact you based on your preferences
without any labour hire companies, recruiters or job boards involved based on
these preferences, liaising with you via SMS till there is alignment.
It costs nothing to use this as a jobseeker and its the cost of 1 job ad for
the employer.
A direct, transparent market place between employer & job seeker.
