Each state has its individual
requirements regarding licensing, so first check your area’s rules before
hiring any electrician. In most cases, all electricians will need formal
education, job training, and have finished an apprenticeship before they can start
working unsupervised as a qualified electrician. Most states require
electricians to complete ongoing education as well throughout their careers to
stay on track with the latest rules and regulations. In Victoria there is a new
mandate where every A-Grade needs to have completed within two years of their
licence being renewed, 8 or more hours of CPD (continuing professional
development) training before their licence is renewed.
Before you hire an electrician
for work make sure they have the subsequent qualifications and that their
licence is registered with the local licencing authority. In Victoria it is
Energy Safe Victoria.
Another critical aspect
now-a-days is that there are not as many qualified electricians for the number
of job for electrician
available. So understanding what is unique about your business &
highlighting that during the hiring process is critical. Another aspect is in
addressing the jobseeker’s pain points – why are they thinking of leaving to
j00. If you do not, then the electrician you hire may not stick around for a
long period of time.
So the things to look out for
are:
Gain their interest
Figure out your value proposition
so you can highlight why they should consider your business and not anyone
else. Understand why the individual wants to consider another role and see if
your business can meet that goal. If yes, then proceed. If not don’t try and
force this via a rate increase – as those sort of jobseekers won’t last long.
Are they licenced?
Check their licence against the
local licencing authority – to ensure that they are genuinely locally licenced
as required by law.
Decent Reviews
Check some references for them –
whether it is an employer or a client related reference or a Google review if
they are a sub-contractor.
Individual Liability Insurance
If they are a sub-contractor
ensure they have all the licences needed which would include Public Liability,
Workers Compensation various car related insurances and others specific to the
role – like working at heights qualifications.
Apprentice
If it is an apprentice you are
hiring do some reference checks by talking to their teachers – sometimes this
is the only reference available. Clever interviewing asking open ended
questions is also important to pick up the soft skills an apprentice has.
